EBOX Fibre UniFi Setup

This page documents the common ebox unifi recipe: PPPoE on the WAN with ebox vlan 40 and ebox mtu 1492. It is not an official EBOX document—verify anything business-critical with EBOX support.

Short answer

Connect the EBOX/Bell ONT to your UniFi WAN port with Ethernet, then configure PPPoE using VLAN ID 40 and MTU 1492 unless EBOX gives you a different worksheet for your circuit.

How the pieces connect

People also search this as ebox bell fibre plus UniFi because the fibre drop itself is still Bell infrastructure in many Ontario installs, while ebox ftth is the retail ISP relationship.

UniFi WAN settings

Typical values for ebox pppoe on UniFi
Setting Value
Connection type PPPoE
VLAN ID 40
MTU 1492
DNS Automatic, or your preferred resolvers
IPv6 DHCPv6-PD when UniFi and upstream both cooperate

ONT vs router

The ebox ont terminates fibre and hands off Ethernet (or in some rare designs, another interface documented by the installer). Your router authenticates to the ISP using PPPoE and handles NAT, firewalling, and Wi-Fi if built in.

Do you need the Nokia Beacon router?

Many installs ship with an ebox nokia beacon-class router for Wi-Fi. If your UniFi gateway performs PPPoE with VLAN 40 and plugs straight into the ONT Ethernet port, the Beacon is usually redundant. Keep it as a cold spare unless EBOX documents a bridge mode you prefer.

Troubleshooting

No internet

Confirm physical WAN, VLAN ID, PPPoE username/password, and that you are not double-NATting an ISP router still in line.

Wrong VLAN

Symptoms look like authentication never starts. Compare against the provisioning note for your order—most Ontario Bell FTTH PPPoE guides cite VLAN 40, but treat your paperwork as authoritative.

Wrong PPPoE password

PPPoE will flap quickly. Copy credentials carefully; some portals show passwords with easy-to-miss symbols.

MTU issues

If certain sites break while others work, revisit MTU 1492 on the PPPoE interface and look for clamping/MSS settings on advanced platforms.

Link only negotiates 1 GbE

Many ONT Ethernet ports are 1 Gb/s. Multi-gig WAN requires the right ONT port and router hardware—do not assume 2.5G/10G path unless the installer documents it.

CGNAT check

If inbound IPv4 services fail, verify whether your plan is CGNAT and whether a public/static add-on exists. See the FAQ for high-level notes.
